The airset moulding method of manufacture contrasts with the other sand foundry uk methods of manufacture, see greensand machine moulding page, in so far as chemicals are added in the sand foundry uk process. Sand is mixed with a chemical resin binder to give an additional strength to the mould created.

Of the sand foundry uk processes, the dimensional accuracy of airset moulding is generally superior to that of levels achievable with greensand machine moulding and indeed often approaches the levels attained with aluminium die casting uk.

Pattern costs are similar to that of greensand machine moulding and as such are far less costly than the initial tooling costs involved with aluminium die casting uk production.

The cooling fins on one of the example castings shows how the draft angle can be minimised. The fins are 70mm long with 1 degree of draft angle tapering to 2.5mm wide at the end. The metal pattern used for this part was produced in house.
